What it does

Retinal targets the same fine lines, texture, and pore concerns as retinol, but tends to act faster and more intensely at an equivalent percentage.

How it works

Retinal is one conversion step closer to active retinoic acid than retinol is, so the skin needs less enzymatic work to activate it — which is why it's often recommended for skin that has already built tolerance to retinol.

Take care

Same caution class as retinol: patch test, gradual introduction, daily sunscreen, not intended for anyone under 18 without a doctor's guidance, and avoid during pregnancy/breastfeeding without medical advice. Because it's stronger-acting, irritation can appear faster if you skip the slow-start schedule.
